Donovan Te Ahunui Farnham has tribal affiliations with Ngāti Awa and Tūhoe. He was educated in te reo Māori, having attended Kōhanga Reo, Rumaki Reo Kura within central Tāmaki Makaurau and The University of Auckland.

He is a graduate of Te Panekiretanga o te Reo and has also gained the Toi Reo Māori certification as a licensed translator and interpreter. Te Ahunui has also graduated with a Masters in Māori Language Excellence from Te Wānanga o Aotearoa.
